Proven Success

Stem cell research has already showed improvements towards the symptoms of multiple sclerosis. MS is an autoimmune disease that is caused by a defect in the body's immune system, which turns in on itself, causing damage to the nerves. At first, the condition mostly causes symptoms that are partly reversible but over a 10-15 year period, most patients develop secondary progressive MS, with irreversible neurological impairment.
But as the study leader Professor Richard Burt puts it: "You don't want to wait until the horse has left the barn before you close the barn door; you want to treat early."
And that's what your stem cells will do.
"Stem cells are showing more and more potential in the treatment of MS and the challenge we now face is proving their effectiveness.."
Stem cells were harvested from the patients bone marrow and frozen while drugs were given to remove the immune cells causing the damage. The stem cells were then transplanted back to replenish the immune system and effectively resetting it.
While stem cell research continues to improve patients, or in this case a study, it is still just being figured out. I can only imagine the potential, the cures, the overall advancements that lies in the research of bone marrow stem cells and embryonic cells. I have never read an article about the research that was negative; I have yet to at least. To read more about this study Go HERE. BBC News
