Tomorrow, the House of Representatives will be voting on a bill to modify, reorganize annnd I don't know.. UPDATE a 135-yr old mining law. The General Mining Law of 1872 has governed hard rock mining and as allowed mining companies to buy up Americas public land for cheap. Currently, The General Mining Law of 1872 contains: no protection from mining pollution, grants the owners special tax breaks, and sells public land for less then $5 an acre.
This law has continuously threatened wildlife and our national forests. Worst of all The General Mining Law of 1872 applies to more then an astounding 270 million acres of federal land! Almost a quarter of all the land in the U.S.!
The National Wildlife Federation is asking the heroes out there to write in to their Representatives urging them to vote YES to reform this bill to include more restrictions or you can cross your t's and fill out your information on their written letter.
The above picture is of Senator William Stewart, the father of The General Mining Law of 1872. Check him out; he's riding a donkey.
