Kinda Wimpy :

A five nation scientific team has published new evidence that even a slight rise in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere affects the stability of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS). The research, which was published in the March 19 issue of the journal Nature, is based on investigations by a 56 member team of scientists conducted on a 1,280-meter long sedimentary rock core taken from beneath the sea floor under Antarctica's Ross Ice Shelf during the first project of the ANDRILL (ANtarctic geological DRILLing) research program.
"The sedimentary record indicates that under global warming conditions that were similar to those projected to occur over the next century, protective ice shelves could shrink or even disappear and the WAIS would become vulnerable to melting," said Ross Powell, a professor of geology at Northern Illinois University. "If the current warm period persists, the ice sheet could diminish substantially or even disappear over time. This would result in a potentially significant rise in sea levels." Ice World

Venice Sinks As Waters Rise

Venice is planning to raise its buildings to protect them against rising sea levels. Engineers are planning to lift buildings under operation "Rialto" by up to one metre using piston supported poles to be placed at the bottom of each structure. Rialto will allow Venice, which sank by 23 centimetres in the last century, to regain its original look and to preserve its buildings. Source.

France Plans on Fakin' Christmas

Due to an unusual snowless winter, France plans on keeping the spirit of a white Christmas alive by covering the Eiffel Tower with artificial snow. But a french environmental association, Robin des Bois (Robin Hood), warns that the fake snow display would waste thousands of cubic meters of water. The group also accused the Eiffel Tower of "exploiting global warming" by hiding France's lack of snow with a fake Christmas at one of the world's most visited landmarks.
The tower's managing company rejected the charge, saying the Christmas operation would use "..No more than 60 cubic metres of water".
Initially, then many more cubic meters of water to keep it white because, ya know, the darn stuff keeps melting.

Forget The Glaciers, We're Going To Starve To Death

The Worlds food supply is dwindling and the most likely culprit is that damned Global Warming.

In a report by the International Food Policy Research Institute, titled "The World Food Situation", farm experts warn that the increase in global temperatures will cause a decrease in the entire worlds agriculture production with sub-Sahara Africa to be affected the most.
Released in Beijing, the report states: "World agricultural output is projected to decrease significantly due to global warming, and the impact on developing countries will be much more severe than industrialised nations. Africa is particularly vulnerable to climate change because of its high proportion of low-input, rain-fed agriculture, compared with Asia or Latin America."
The group urges representatives to take food issues into consideration when developing national and international climate change policies.

A Global Warning

UN chief Ban Ki-moon flew to Antarctica on Friday on a fact-finding mission for climate change, becoming the first UN leader to make an official visit to the frozen continent. Ki-moon was taken to Antarctica to get a first-hand look on how global warming is affecting its glaciers.
"This trip, you may call it an Eco-trip, but I'm not here as a choice," he told reporters. "I'm here as a messenger of all the warnings on climate change. I'm here to observe the impact of the global warming phenomena, to see for myself and to learn all I can about what's happening in Antarctica and actually around the world."
Ban Ki-moon also hopes that his tour of the continent will draw politicians to notice the melting glacier dilemma and in turn motivate them to take action. Source.

Evidence of Global Warming That The Trees Remember

Exposed tree stumps, that were once frozen in time under the glaciers of Canada's Garibaldi Provincial Park, are giving geologists new insight into the accelerated rates to which they are melting.
"The stumps were in very good condition sometimes with bark preserved," said Geologist Johannes Koch from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia.
To find out how long the tree stumps have been living in ice, Koch radiocarbon-dated the wood. He discovered that the trees had been buried under tens to hundreds meters if ice for 7000 years! This realization shows that this is the first time these trees have been exposed in that amount of time. There have been many advances and retreats of the glaciers over the past 7000 yrs but none so far as expose these trees.
"It seems like an unprecedented change in a short amount of time," Koch said. "From this work and many other studies looking at forcings of the climate system, one has to turn away from natural ones alone to explain this dramatic change of the past 150 years." Source.

U.S. Senate Needs a Jump

The National Wildlife Federation is urging everyone to keep Congress rolling with plans towards a cleaner future. In order to pass strong, inclusive Global Warming legislation, we must first pass an energy bill for 2007. An energy bill that requires the use of more renewable energy, call for vehicles to go farther on one gallon of gas and more protection of our public land.
Visit NWF Action of the Day to see if your Representative is a cosponsor for strong Global Warming Legislation. Also, cross yout t's and send a letter to Congress to Jump Start their decision for cleaner energy.
Do you like my image? It's how I imagine clean energy to look if you could see it. ..wow Ok, I'm ending this post.

Greenpeace Calls You Out

On November 3, exactly one year before the 2008 presidential election, Greenpeace USA is asking everyone to Step It Up -our fight against global warming. Well.. they're asking you to ask the presidential candidates to Step Up their decisions towards greenhouse gas emissions, an increase in fuel economy standards and to make a bigger investment in renewable energy.
Visit the website here to sign up and take action.
So far 3 candidates are attending: Senator John McCain, Representative Dennis Kucinich and John Edwards.. that's it? I know.
I am signed up for the Take Action Green NOW that is to be held at the Cook Campus Center in New Brunswick, NJ. I will tell you, later of course, what I've learned and how it all went down.
